Apple pay not working on Apple watch Series 5

When I'm trying to pay I press the side button twice, a "hold near card reader" screen appears with the card I wish to use, and when I put the watch near the card reader nothing happens, no sound or vibration, it's like the watch is not detected by the card reader at all. Assistive touch is turned off, I've turned it on and off to be sure, I've re-added the cards, reset the watch and still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Are you able to successfully use Apple Pay with your iPhone (either in-store, online, or in-app)? This can help to see if the issue is with Apple Pay in general on your devices or only specifically when trying to make a purchase in-store with your Apple Watch.


You've taken some great steps with your Apple Watch. When you say you reset your Apple Watch, was that a force restart or did you erase your Apple Watch and set it up again? We want to make sure we understand clearly the step you took.


Also, if you haven't already, you'll want to also make sure your Apple Watch is fully updated:

Hello Claire,


By reset I mean factory reset of the apple watch, and I'm also able to pay via my phone without any problems, both in the app store and via POS terminals.


In terms of steps, let me list them in a better manner, as I understand my initial post is not structured well:

I removed and re-added the cards on the watch,

I turned on and off AssistiveTouch,

I performed a factory reset on the Apple watch,

The phone and watch are both updated to the latest versions as well.


The phone is working fine, so I think the problem may be related to the NFC chip on the watch, which I understand cannot be replaced.
