ipad mini 6 randomly dims

My iPad mini 6 randomly dims and brightens when using it outside. I have shut off auto brightness and tried several other setting changes but it hasn’t helped. When it dims it actually dims to 3 different levels, dim, dimmer, extra dim! Then brightens whenever. Someone out there know how to stop this. And no it is not overheating.

thank you

When the iPad is too hot, your iPad will attempt to control its internal temperature by dimming the display backlight.

When used outdoors, the ambient light level tends to be much brighter than when indoors. As such, the iPad display will try to compensate by brightening - however, high backlight levels causes heat to be generated. When used in sunlight, the iPad internal temperature will rise considerably - and the iPad will respond in reducing brightness. High internal temperature may not be readily obvious.

If outdoors, it is essential that you try to control the iPad’s temperature. Stay in the shade - and where a case is used, perhaps consider removing the case to improve cooling.

The ambient temperature may “only” be 80°, but the internal iPad temperature will be much higher.

The iPad’s thermal management is doing its job - in trying to protect your iPad, in particular the battery, from irreversible thermal damage. Quoting directly from Apple… If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch gets too hot or too cold - Apple Support

“If your device gets too warm

iOS and iPadOS devices have built-in protections to prevent overheating. If the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, your device will protect its internal components by attempting to regulate its temperature. Here are some of the higher ambient-temperature conditions and activities to avoid, because they might cause your device to change performance and behavior:

  • Avoid leaving your device in a car on a hot day.
  • Avoid leaving your device in direct sunlight for an extended period of time.
  • Avoid using certain features in hot conditions or direct sunlight for an extended period of time, such as GPS tracking or navigation in a car, playing a graphics-intensive game, or using augmented-reality apps.

If the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, you might notice these changes:

  • Charging, including wireless charging, slows or stops.
  • The display dims or goes black.
  • Cellular radios enter a low-power state. The signal might weaken during this time.
  • The camera flash is temporarily disabled.
  • Performance slows with graphics-intensive or augmented-reality apps or features.”

Thank you for the information. I understand why this dimming is happening now. But, still disappointed at the design robustness of this iPad. As I said, the conditions where I am using this device are not extreme. There are ways to do better thermal management. That being said, I guess I just have to be careful of where I am using this device. This is not what I would expect from an apple design.
