Red Box on iPad

My daughter’s iPad has had red boxes randomly appearing in apps and on the Home Screen. I looked within the Apple Support Community for a fix, which led me to see if the switch control was on (under the accessibility setting). It wasn’t turned on. ALSO, it’s impossible for me to turn it on and turn it off again since that button is unpushable. (See attached photo.) Any other suggestions to get the red boxes to disappear.

Despite what it says below, we’re working with an iPad (6th generation). It has the iOS 15.4.1.

Switch Control requires adaptive accessory hardware that you seemingly lack. So… probably not a factor, here.

See these two settings:

Settings > Accessibility > Touch Accommodations > off

Settings > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch) > off

Make an appointment, and bring it into the local Apple Store.

Or use the Get Support link in the upper right of this webpage, and discuss this misbehavior with Apple.

Worst they can do here is tell you "no", or tell you that fixing whatever might cost "$x", right? Best case, they recognize this and can fix it.

I gave this a try. Unfortunately, the red boxes are still popping up at random times on the iPad.

The iPad is over 2 years old and therefore no longer has active Apple Care. Do you think they'll still help me (at the store)?
