Create a chart with two related but not scalable data sets

Hello,

I want to create one chart that plots electricity usage and outside temperature by month and year. I'd like usage to be on a left-hand y-axis with its scale and temperature on a right-hand y-axis with a separate scale. The x-axis is months.

Hello Bud,

I assume you'd like to get something like this, correct?

Sorry but there is no easy / automated way to do this in Apple Numbers, at least I did not find it.

In Excel you can pick primary and secondary y-axis and you are done, I never found this option in Numbers.

In Numbers it is more manual work, but if you really need it you can do it.

Step 1:

Create you data and a diagram for the first set of data.

Define min & max value manually, also define the size and position of the diagram.

Add vertical text for left and right y axis description.

Step 2:

Create a diagram for the second set of data and delete all the value labels for y & x axis.

Define min & max value manually, also define the size of the diagram. Size must be identical with first diagram.

Add custom reference lines to your diagram. You can add max 5 custom reference lines, therefore your first diagram should also have max 5 horizontal lines. Best case they will match, then it is easy to read.

Now you just have to move the second diagram to the exact position of the first diagram and you have something that looks nice.

Also move the legend, then it will look like one legend.

As I wrote in the beginning: It is not easy or user friendly and you must fix the range for each diagram manually, but currently it is the only solution that I know.

Maybe someone will tell me that there is an easier way to do it, let's see if there will be other solutions.

There is a two-axis chart in Numbers. It is a "category" chart, not a true X-Y (scatter) chart, which means your X data needs to be evenly spaced for the chart to be "correct". Months are evenly spaced so you're good to go there.

The icon for the chart is this:

You will have to format the second series as a line and do some formatting to the chart to get it to look like in the screenshot. I suppose I should have formatted the left axis so it had better numbers on each line.
