21.5" iMac running latest ios. Seagate external drive for backup. Seagate had an update recently that required ejecting the drive. I ejected the drive, it no longer showed on the desktop, and unplugged the drive. Restarted the iMac and plugged in the drive. Now I get messages about the External drive not properly ejected. Finer shows the drive and the proper contents. Any ideas why I would be getting these messages? Thanks.

Okay, that is good news. If the TM drive is working okay now and TM is backing up then you can just call it a day. If you continue to get "External Disk not ejected properly" messages, please let us know.

Please uninstall ALL Seagate software from the drive. Not only is it 100% unnecessary it tends to cause problems like you are experiencing. Please restart in Safe Mode per the directions below:

Note: If you are using a wireless keyboard please either plug it in using the supplied Lightning cable that shipped with it. If you are using a legacy keyboard or a third-party keyboard that does not have re-charging abilities, please use any USB keyboard. Also note that a Safe Mode restart may require you to hold down the shift key for up to 5 minutes before the computer starts in Safe Mode. You will know it is in Safe Mode when you see “Safe Mode” in the upper right of the display.
Next, please restart normally and please retest.

Bottom line is the issue is almost certainly due to the drive being a buss powered drive and your settings. When it comes to external HD's buy quality, please don't be penny wise and pound foolish. A quality enclosure and HD will pay you back in reliability and longevity.
Thank you for your response, I have a few questions for clarity. Should I eject the drive before the uninstall? When in safe mode do I reinstall the Seagate Software? When do I return to normal mode? And yes I have the wireless keyboard that came with the iMac thanks.
No need to eject prior to uninstalling the Seagate software. After it has been uninstalled DO NOT re-install it ever!
After you have restarted in Safe Mode, please restart normally and test the drive.
I guess I used the wrong terminology, after so many minutes of inactivity the iMac goes to screen saver and ultimately goes to sleep/turns off. When I hit "enter" and type my password, the aforementioned message comes up. To be specific, the same message appears twice.
I went to finder and the only things on the Seagate drive are date-coded backup folders with a type of "Time Machine Backup" there is no Seagate software that shows up in Finder.
Well, now when I "Wake Up" the iMac, I still get the message, "Disk Not Ejected Properly. Eject "Seagate Backup" before disconnecting or turning off." Thanks for your help.
Common issue. Do not put your drive to sleep. Just turn off monitor and/or use screen saver. This appears to work for most people using Monterey.
OK, I will take your advice and look for another external drive and uncheck the noted box. Other than the annoyance of the messages, is this doing any harm? Thank you again for your help.
Honestly I don't think there is any harm other than to the External Hard Disk which may be starting and stopping too often which could shorten its life.
Probably the sleep settings. I had the same issue with external powered drives being ejected until I stopped the hard drive sleeping feature.
