When I get a call from someone NOT in my phone book, often it only shows up as WIRELESS CALLER or TOLL FREE CALL. Later when I look in the call log I see that there IS a phone number associated with the caller ID. Why doesn’t my phone show me the number on the incoming call screen? WIRELESS CALLER is totally worthless.

Have you contacted your carrier and asked this question to their support service? This is because the Caller ID information is provided by your carrier to your iPhone to display.

i Have. I am waiting to see if they’ll fix it. But in the meantime it occurred to me this wouldn’t be an issue if the iPhone would just show the name AND the phone number. As I said before the number shows up afterwards in the call log along with the worthless name, so it would appear that the carrier is sending the information, but the iPhone is choosing not to display it.
What you see is what is sent by the number that is calling you. But it’s your carrier that is doing it. I always see the number if it isn’t in my contacts; I never see “wireless caller” or anything like it.
