iCloud+ Custom domain name change problem when Apple ID already uses that same domain name?

What if my current Apple ID --- IS an email ALREADY using that domain, but presently configured elsewhere. I will need to reconfigure that domain's settings for use with Custom domain name iCloud+, so must I temporarily change my apple ID to be able to receive any confirmation or authentication emails during the transition? ex. Apple ID is hosted at google. I want to use grate.com as custom domain but now, instead of at google, at apple icloud+. So when I change the domain name settings to point at iCloud+, will there be a problem? Same for family user 2 or family user 3?

Thanks for reply. I had no problem switching over to the "use my own domain" with apple cloud+ mail even though my existing apple id was using that domain as part of the email address. It met the requirement of not using an email for a DIFFERENT apple id. Process went smoother than I expected.

We'd be happy to help out. The resource linked at the top of your post would be best equipped to answer your question: Use Custom Email Domain with iCloud Mail - Apple Support

"To use a custom domain with iCloud Mail, you need:

An Apple ID with two-factor authentication turned on.
iCloud Mail turned on on your devices.

To add a personalized email address for a custom domain that you use with iCloud Mail:

That email address can't be used as the email address for a different Apple ID.
If you want to add a personalized email address that is used for a different Apple ID, you need to change that Apple ID email address.
If you delete that Apple ID, you still won't be able to add your personalized email address."

So with the above in mind, as long as what you're changing your custom domain name to isn't already in use by another Apple ID, you should be good to go. If it is, then you'll need to change that Apple ID email address so that it's available for use as a customer domain name on your primary Apple ID.
