Is there a way to unlock or reset an iPhone without knowing the password?

My 87 years mother is using iPhone 6. Due to memory issue her phone had not been setup with any password to unlock. However somehow her phone is now asking for a password, which no one in our family knows what it is or what's happened. Is there a way to unlock or reset without knowing what the password is?

Follow these instructions: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204306

When an iPhone or iPad is not protected with a passcode, absolutely anyone who has physical access to the device for 5-10 seconds can lock it with any passcode, locking out everyone else.

If an iPhone or iPad without a passcode automatically installs a software update, it may prompt the user to set a passcode.
