Read receipts automatically ON

Even though I have changed my settings to ensure read receipts are off, messages still come up as being read. I have tried restarting my phone but this hasn’t changed. What do I do?! The setting still has it listed as off yet receipts are being sent.

Read receipts I have the iPhone 11 with the latest update of 14.2. I have never used read receipts and always keep them turned off, however, all of a sudden people are telling me they can see my read receipts even though they are still turned to off under settings and under the individuals contact. Read receipts displayed even when toggled off I just upgraded my device to the iPhone 12 Pro. It is on the most up to date version, 14.3. I noticed that read receipts are on, despite the toggle having never been on before. Ive tried toggling it off and on and off. Ive tried restarting. I don’t know what else to do. I do not like this feature and prefer it off. I googled this and it seems it’s been a big since 14.1. Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, G

This means you are not sending read receipts. You may well be receiving read receipts when someone else reads your messages.
