iMovie play head jumps to start of clip when I try to split it.

Hi all,

Complete novice here, if this is the wrong forum apologies in advance. I’m trying to do a video of a song with the words showing. I assume I use the “title” option, for the text? But when I highlight the clip the play head jumps back to the start of the clip so I can’t split it. The vocals on the song need to coincide with the text, hence I thought splitting the clips would be the way to do this. I’ve a feeling I’m barking up the wrong tree but if anyone can shed light on this I’d be grateful. If this is Mac only sorry let me know and I’ll move on!

Hi,

This is the iMovie for Mac forum, so you are in the right place.

The play head should not be jumping to the start of the clip when you try to split it. Wherever along the timeline that you click on the clip, then that will be the point where the playhead is placed. To split the clip at that point you can either do a Modify/Split Clip or Control-click on the clip and select Split Clip from the pop up menu. If that is not happening, then try deleting preferences and see if that cures the problem. Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.

To delete preferences, open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects.  Now open your project and see if the Split Clip function works correctly.

Another thing that you can try is to create a new project, put your clips into it, and see if the Split Clip function works properly there.
