how can I generate a recovery key for a mac i am locked out of

I am having this same problem.

I have tried:

1. Go to your Apple ID account page. ✅
2. Sign in with your password and trusted device. ✅
3. In the Security section, click Edit > Replace Lost Key. ❌

I know my Apple ID credentials and am able to do steps 1 & 2 however step 3 is where I get stuck because there is not an Edit nor an option of Replace Lost Key. I am locked out of my MacBook and it is ONLY asking for a recovery key without any other options. It seems that there may have been an update to the Apple ID account page that hasn't been reflected in the Support answers for this issue.

Is there no other way now to generate a new Recovery Key?

I understand that you are unable to log in to your Mac, but I can think of at least four different reasons for that. None of them are related to generating a Recovery Key.

Please post your own Discussion. It is not clear what the problem is, and the originator of this one has not returned to resolve the uncertainty.

That doesn't necessarily follow the apparent premise of your concern though. If you are unable to use your Apple ID because it is "locked" and you did not previously generate a Recovery Key, you have to regain access to your Apple ID first. Exhaust all the steps in If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support.
