Gmail is miscounting my new messages on iPhone 13, software 15.4.1

How can I fix how Gmail counts my email messages. On my MacBook Air gmail lists 23 new messages. On my iPhone 13 my new Gmail messages total 266. This list has grown steadily in two days.

I don't know where to fix this.

Hey arfellows,

First you'll want to back up your iPhone, then update the software and apps as that helps with issues and provides security updates. Here are some guides to help, just in case:

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

How to manually update apps on your Apple device

If the behavior continues, remove the account and add it back. Those steps can be found under "Remove your email account and set it up again" here: If you can't receive email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Let us know how it goes.

Take care.

arfellows,

Have you been able to check the messages that are shown as 'unread' in the Mail app on each device to see if they have been read previously on one of the devices?

Be sure to also try logging into the webmail version of your Gmail account on their website, just to see what this shows regarding unread emails, as that may be a good indicator of what's happening server-side.

Just to note, there's a newer iOS version available as well. Updating will help ensure you have the latest fixes/improvements applied: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Similarly, try checking for any macOS updates as well: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

Cheers.

I deleted my gmail account and logged in again. Things seem the same. On my MacBook Air laptop I have 22 unread messages in gmail. On my gmail on my phone I have 160 unread messages. The mail is now listed as *** rather than just Gmail. My old MacBook Pro also thinks I have 160 un read messages. This laptop refers to Gmail as Google.

These differences must mean something.

I have the same problem on an early 2011 MacBook Pro. It is running High Sierra 10.13.8. It can not be updated anymore because of the age of the hardware. It has not been turned on in weeks. It shows 225 in Gmail when I log in thru Google. When I log into Gmail under Mac Mailbox it show 246 unread. My iPhone 13 is showing 246 unread. I deleted gmail from my phone, turned it on and off and the error is still there.

My MacBook Air 2013 with MacOs Catalina 10.16.7 is working fine. It shows 23 unread messages. This is the correct number of unread.

Has anyone else seen this? Got any suggestions?

I am not sure
