Mail Unreliability

I'm researching this issue for a fried, who has an iPhone XR, 128GB. Its running 15.4.1 and modern firmware 4.03.02.

He has set up email on his phone, going to a Gmail account, and while it works OK while he is in the immediate vicinity of his home (BT) router, when he goes outside, he frequently gets mail warnings that "something went wrong". I assume this is due to the strength of the wireless signal outside being weaker than inside, but surely, under those circumstances, cellular data should take over. This is not a constant problem, an I'm wondering if I can force the phone to stay using 2.4GHz (better penetration) instead of 5GHz, or if anyone else has experienced this problem and has a comment

Thanks for any ideas!

Thanks for the document. I had not read it, but it sounds like it may be pointing in the right direction. Is there also a document that tells how to configure the most preferred network on the iPhone?

Another option is to turn on Wi-Fi assist in Settings/Cellular. This will switch to cellular data if the Wi-Fi signal is unreliable.
