Second screen turns off when I walk away

I use my macbook in my class and hook up vga using a usb-c dongle. It works fine for the most part but it seems like as soon as I walk away the second screen goes off. First I thought it was just based on time like the sleep, but one of my students pointed out that it happens right after I get up. I am wondering if maybe the laptop uses the camera or something and when it does not register my presence it turns off? The main laptop screen stays on thought.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.3

Something is overly sensitive to something ... which basically just says you have a problem.

At this point, my guess is you have some sort of intermittent mechanical failure. If it's not mechanical, it has to be software ... code of some kind.

Other than taking it to Apple to be evaluated, you can run diagnostics: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support

Or you could reinstall your OS: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support

No matter what it is, you have to be the one to take whatever action you feel is appropriate. Since you have students, maybe one of them familiar with the situation has a theory. Just before you do anything, make a backup. Maybe even a couple of them for enhanced security.
