connecting printer to new MacBook Pro 2021

I'm trying to get my Canon MX 490 Printer to talk to my MacBookPro 2021. I bought a Syntech USB C to USB OTG Adapter to get around the lack of ports where I can plug my printer directly into my laptop (since that would be too simple, errrrgh) but it does not seem to work. Did I buy the wrong adaptor?

I downloaded the most current driver for the printer, and it Seems to recognize that the printer is out there, but it's not willing do do anything beyond just saying "uh huh, you are out there".

Hi,

MX490 appears to be a series.

Does your printer possibly have one of the following model numbers?

  • Canon MX491
  • Canon MX492
  • Canon MX494
  • Canon MX495
  • Canon MX496
  • Canon MX497
  • Canon MX498
  • Canon MX499

If so, it is listed in the About AirPrint - Apple Support article. The printer would then be AirPrint-compatible, which means that it should be possible to use it through a wireless connection without having to install drivers, provided that the printer and the MacBook Pro are connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router).

The AirPrint guide from Canon Europe for similar models (such as MX494 and MX495) has additional information.

If you have access to an iPhone or iPad, you could test the printer's AirPrint capability.

It is also interesting to note that the Canon MX490 specifications at https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/printers/support-inkjet-printer/mx-series/pixma-mx490?tab=technicalspecifications mention AirPrint.

If necessary, for USB, or a wireless connection (without AirPrint), drivers appear to exist for up to macOS 12 Monterey.

Incompatibility being the Culprit:

What's your macOS?*** According to the manufacture, this is only compatible with macOS 10.7 - 10.10. If you do not have to versions, then it just won't work. You only work around would be to use a Virtual Machine of Windows.

  1. Go here: PIXMA MX490 - Canon
  2. Scroll to: OS Compatibility
  3. As it Reeds: Mac OS X v10.7.5 - v10.10
