My Gmail inbox disappeared on my iPad. How can I restore. All other boxes are intact

Presumably you are using the native Mail App to access your Gmail?
If so, simply delete and re-add the Gmail account from iPad settings. No mail messages will be lost - as all mail is stored on Google’s servers.
To remove the account:
Settings > Mail > [Your Gmail account] > Delete account
