One option is to open the Pages app on your Mac and then use the Pages File menu > Open to select and open a Word document.

There is a dedicated Pages for Mac community for Pages related questions.

As Pages is no Word clone, it will translate opened Word documents into the native Pages (.pages) document format. The original Word document is not changed, or savable. When you export from Pages back to Word, another translation event occurs, and Apple does not guarantee either translation will be accurate, or represent the appearance of the original Word document, as it might appear to those using Word.

If you are sharing Word documents with others that use Word, you should be using Word (or a very good Word clone) yourself so the document can be opened, edited, and saved in the native Word document format. Though not free, but with free trial, one of the better Office clones is by Softmaker in their Office 2021 Professional suite. Very likely easier to learn and use than the free LibreOffice that has a learning curve.
