Permanently turn off low-data mode on an iPad

I want to remain PERMANENTLY in NON Low Data for my iPhone in Personal Hotspot mode unless I specifically turn it off.

I hate it how Apple thinks they should dictate how my Settings should work, not me.

  1. I have an Unlimited data supply on my phone plan and it is my only internet connection, so I want my Hotspot Setting on my iPhone to not automatically disconnect when I want it to stay on always unless I want it disconnected.

  1. I don't want to have to turn off Low Data every time I connect to my iPhone Hotspot again.

I'm smart enough to know when I do and don't want it on or off. Why does Apple think they have the right to override MY Settings on MY devices - they are MINE to do what I want to? That's what I paid the exorbitant price charged for them - to make them MINE, it's not Apple's iPhone after I buy it.

My kitchen doesn't lock me out when I have removed a certain amount of food each day. I can come and go as I please because it's MY kitchen, however, I can lock myself out of it whenever I like.

It's a pain in the arse to have to go through the reconnection, and then turn off Low Data mode on my iPad when I have been away from usage for a little while - even just the length of a short TV segment I leave it to watch something on TV.

I generally leave the phone connected to my computer unless I'm leaving the house, so Battery isn't much of an issue. That's what I have a charger cable in my bag for.

From your description, I’m not entirely sure that I fully comprehend the nature of the problem…

You iPhone has limited battery capacity - and when providing a WiFi hotspot, will be significantly impacting its available autonomy while the hotspot connection is active. By design, your iPhone will try to maximise its available battery life.

Wherever the WiFi hotspot falls idle for a few minutes, the WiFi hotspot will automatically shut down. However, if the iPhone and iPad are both signed in to iCloud with the same AppleID and other settings are correct, the hotspot connection will be automatically re-established on demand by your iPad:

iPhone

Settings > Mobile Data > Personal Hotspot > Allow Others to Join - set to ON

iPad

Settings > WiFi > Auto-Join Hotspot - set to Automatic

With settings contrived as above, if (a) the iPhone is within range of the iPad and (b) a configured WiFi connection is not available to your iPad, iPad will automatically establish a hotspot connection.

The iPad will initially establish the hotspot connection in low-data mode, but this can be overridden in iPad settings while the hotspot connection is active:

Settings > WiFi > Low Data Mode - set to OFF

If the iPad should become idle, the hotspot connection will automatically drop - however, when the iPad again becomes active, the hotspot connection will be automatically restored; if Low Data mode had previously been disabled, the link will be restored in its full-data mode.

To my knowledge, Low Data mode will only be automatically reset - if at all - if the hotspot connection remains idle for an extended period.
