Just updated to OS Monterey and timemachine is not doing auto backups

Just updated to OS Monterey and timemachine is not doing auto backups (even though selected to do so), I have to manually backup which takes hours, even though I have done a manual backup the day before. Anyone have a suggestion. Many thanks

Could you post a screenshot that shows that a) automatic backups are on and b) there is no "Next backup:"? That definitely sounds like unexpected behavior.

First thing I'd try is a test user. You would go to System Preferences > Users & Groups and create a new user. The name and password don't matter, just be sure it's an administrator rather than standard account. Then, log out ( Apple Menu > Log Out [name]) and into the new user. You don't need to sign in with the Apple id when it asks you to. You'll then want to attempt creating an automatic backup. If that works, the issue is something related to your user account data. It can be hard to narrow down from there. Otherwise, the issue is with system data, and you may want to consider reinstalling macOS as a troubleshooting step.

The user guide article doesn't have information specific to automatic backup troubleshooting. It does mention being up to date. I know you said monterey, is it running the latest version (12.4)?

This same thing happened to me, too. It turns out my G-Drive for Time Machine was no longer connected. I reconnected it and all seems well with Time Machine now.

My backups stopped at about the same time as I installed the latest Monterey update, 12.4. Seems possible that the update caused the G-Drive disconnect, which has never happened before.

Monterey prefers that the TM drive be formatted to APFS, GUID Partition ilo HFS (Mac OS Journaled). Also you will find it more difficult to access your old backed up files if on the same drive. I would suggest you get another drive and use Disk Utilities to format to APFS and start a new backup. You can keep your old drive just in case for now.
