How to configure the resolution correctly if I am using a mac book air m1 as additional Display?

Here is my current scenario:

I have a Macbook pro 2017 as work laptop.

I use a Macbook air M1 as display

I do the following Settings -> Display -> Add Display -> "mac air"

It works just fine but the resolution on the mac air is entirely wrong and it does not let me select an actual valid resolution.

What can I do to fix this?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.4

Can you verify you have the 'MacBook w/built in Retina Display' set to— Use as: Main

then select the 'macair' and make changes to the extended ...(?)

Can you toggle to a mirrored setup and test, toggle back and test again (?)

To Urquhart1244: If I set it to "Default for Display" it will have the same resolution as "2880 x 1620".

To leroydouglas: Yes this is the setting I used. I can also switch the main & extended setting but it does not resolve the issue. The resolution is always wrong on the M1 macbook air but correct on the mac book pro.

Btw. If I set it to "mirror" display instead the resolution is correct (as both screens have same resolution). Only if I extend the desktop it will break the resolution on the M1.

Mac OS will simply use the wrong resolution and won't even let me select the correct one.
