You will have to get your friend, presumably the previous owner, to enter the Apple ID and password to sign out of iCloud. This will remove the lock, and it can be done remotely.

Only the person who set up the activation lock can remove it. If possible, return it for a refund. You will never be able to use this phone.

Sounds like they had “Find My” turned on. Ask them to log in, then search for Find My in Settings and disable it. Hope this helped :)

The phone is worthless until the owner logs on to iCloud using his Apple ID and Password to select the phone and remove it from the Find My settings.
