My MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) runs 11.6.4 really well. I have badge on Software Update telling me I have 1 update available. When I click on it, I go to Software Update and it begins "Checking for updates..." and gets stuck there. In other words, the computer knows it needs an update, but won't download it. Suggestions ??

You can try from a Safeboot
—SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support
Login and test. Reboot as normal when you are done.
If no sucess you can install from your Terminal.app copy and paste:
sudo softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 11.6.6

Safe boot was all it took. Macbook Pro now up and running 11.6.6 with no apparent problems. Maybe the last update ever for this ... old guy / classic macbook / slowly fading dream of long ago.
