Apple watch screen orientation

What is the reason the apple watch has an odd orientation?

The only thing holding me back from purchasing is the screen orientation and fit on my wrist. If the face was landscape it would not protrude so much on my wrist and look a flatter fit. The orientation would also allow for a much bigger screen.

I did put this on the Apple Feedback page but there was no option to add a picture as an example.
