Watch says I have an unread message (when I don't). When I tap the message icon, it show no messages, read or unread, when I have plenty of unread messages.
Seems to be a communication, or permissions issue between iphone and watch.
Any ideas?

For example, you will get notifications for your new messages on your Apple Watch if your iPhone is locked or asleep. Check out Notifications on your Apple Watch - Apple Support for further details. The guidance in that article can also help to check whether notification settings on your Apple Watch are mirrored from your iPhone.
If those settings look correct, unpairing your Apple Watch then pairing again can help if there is a communication issue. Steps to unpair can be found in Unpair and erase your Apple Watch - Apple Support.
