iPad (7th gen) stopped working during a data transfer to an iPhone 12 mini

My son got a new iPhone 12 mini and we initiated the data transfer process from his old iPad (7th generation) which up to that point had been his primary device. In the middle of the data transfer process, the iPad completely shut down and we have not been able to turn it back on since then (even after charging it for days). Has anyone ever experienced this before? Any ideas? It's hard to troubleshoot because we can't get it to turn on but there is still a lot of stuff on his iPad that he'd like access to. Thanks for your feedback!

“Transfer” is rather a misnomer. In reality, your data and setup is merely cloned to the new device.  Nothing is moved or removed from the original device; as such, if the iPad can be powered-on, all data should be intact.

Connect your iPad to its Power Adapter and allow the iPad to charge, undisturbed, for at least an hour. While still connected to external power, try a forced-restart:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

Note:  If iPad still doesn’t turn on, or if it gets stuck during start up, see the Apple Support article If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t turn on or is frozen. Or if your iPad isn’t working correctly after you restart it, see the iPad Support website.

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad:

Consider also that you may already have an iCloud or iTunes backup of the old iPad. If so, this can be used to restore all data directly to the new iPad.

These support pages should get you started with setup of your new iPad - and the methods of transferring your data from old to new iPad:

Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone, iPad or iPod touch – Apple Support

If the donor iPad, from which you are transferring your data precedes iOS12.4, QuickStart will not be available.

As outlined above, the alternative is to restore either an iCloud or iTunes backup to the new device:
