How to move pictures to an external HD?

My iMac desktop is very slow. It has been suggested to transfer my pictures (>20.000 +1240 videos) to an external hard drive, I have unsuccessfully tried several time using a 3T Seagate EHD. Can anyone suggest the correct way of doing it? Will be greatly appreciated.

This is the way:

Move your Photos library to save space on your Mac - Apple Support

Once you have moved the library and confirmed that Photos can access it properly, move the original library from its location on the startup drive to the trash, empty the trash and reboot the computer.
