AirPods switch between Mac and Android

I have a MacBook Air M1 and a Oneplus 8 phone and am considering buying AirPods 3 or Pro. Will switching between those devices work smoothly (open bluetooth and click on AirPods)? I don't want to pair them every time I switch. I heard from somewhere that after using them on an Apple device you would need to forget them before pairing to another device which is even worse.airpod
