The battery status bar on my MacBook Pro has disappeared

The battery status bar on my MacBook Pro has disappeared and the fan runs continually

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.13

If fixed this by shutting down the Mac completely, waiting 10 seconds and turning it on again.
