Can anyone tell me what is the function of the little battery on the logic board?
This refers to any Mac, but it is in particular reference to a MacBookPro 2017 (or 2016), the one with the changeable function key set.

Those usually maintain date and time and other "settings" you want to be retained when the unit is powered off or the battery is dead.
Thank you. So it does not do much and probably explains why it lasts so long.
At the moment, the main battery is totally dead. TechTool Pro kept warning me but I thought I could reopen my Mac with the power cord (like older MacBooks I own) but it does not respond at all. I thought maybe the little battery could enable me to use mains power so at least I could get the data off the SSD.
