When I read a message on my iPhone the notification on my iPad does not clear as read message. I have checked all my settings on both devices from research that I have done and nothing works. It was all fine until a recent iOS update. Any suggestions?

Which iPad do you have? Is it still running iOS 10? Can it be updated further: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Switching on Messages in iCloud on each device should resolve this: Use Messages in iCloud but it is not available on iOS 10.

I have a current iPad with the most current iOS. I tried what you suggested already and it doesn’t work.
