How are RAID drives identified?

Hi,

I'm setting up some RAID 1 arrays but I don't yet have the hardware I'm going to use in the future.

I'm using drive caddies to get the data onto the arrays but am worried that when I buy different different caddies (I'm going to get 2 slot drive bays for each array instead of single drive caddies) that the name of the device will change and Mac OS wont recognize the drives in the array anymore.

Is this worry warranted? Or is there something on the drives that identify them or something I'm missing?

If you are using a software RAID, the information is stored on the drive itself so it will still work as long as both drives spin up together. With a dedicated hardware RAID device you usually cannot move drives around unless you are using the exact same hardware RAID device.
