No.

If you are running iOS 12.5.5, your iPhone is incapable of running a newer iOS version.

Your options are a newer (used, refurb) or new iPhone.

I understand your logic here.

If the software is old, then the hardware is not compatible with the newer software.

For those following along at home…

iOS 12.5.5 arrived after iOS 13.0, so there is no path to that iOS version for any iPhone that can get to iOS 13, iOS 14, and iOS 15.

iOS 13.0 was released 19-Sep-2019, while iOS 12.4.2 and later iOS 12 versions were released on 26-Sep-2019 and later.

If you update an iPhone 6s or newer (still) on iOS 12, you get the then-current iOS; that’s iOS 15.5, presently. You aren’t offered and cannot update to iOS 12.5.5.

Most (all?) folks still running with iOS 12 now either have no free space (and those often stuffed-solid iPhone 6s or iPhone 7 or such with 16 GB, and they get to “use a computer”), or they have an iPhone 6 or earlier (and gets the “nope”).

And if the posters happen to have an under-maintained and unstuffed iPhone 6s or newer still running iOS 12, they’re usually only asking about failed updates.

This is also specifically about the iOS 12 to iOS 13 transition. There were some versions of iOS 14 where you could choose an update to either yet-newer iOS 14 or to iOS 15 for instance, but that did not happen with with iOS 12 and iOS 13.

Updating an iPhone:

What to Update:

Update installed apps along with the iOS.

Determining if an iOS Update will Install:

How to do so...

I. Verify Compatibility:

Identify your iPhone model. The first thing that comes to mind in incompatibility being the culprit. So, confirm the model of your iPhone. If iPhone model is incompatible with iOS15 then it is because you iPhone does not meet the hardware requirements for this iOS version(s).

II. If Compatible...

1. Back Up First:

IMPORTANT: If you have an option to update, however, then be certain you backup your iPhone first. That way, you will have something to restore your iPhone from should anything go wrong with the update

then...

2. Proceed with the Update:

Rent or least your iPhone. That’s what you are asking for here; for a rental.

Outside of a rental or lease and specifically one with a termination, no company can afford to provide support forever.

In software businesses, a rental is a software subscription service, and those too will necessarily have a termination.

No software business and no vehicle manufacturer and no home appliance company—or any other business—can afford to provide this, outside of a time-limited and structured rental/lease/buy-back program.

Not past scrap value, and not past any buy-backs or “cash value” requirements for waste reduction when and where those are implemented.

And as it gets sometimes suggested in this context, devices specifically built for updates have been… less than successful… particularly as the integration increases and the device sizes decrease. The connectors needed in these designs themselves become size and reliability and servicing issues.

The job version of this? If you’ve ever been paid to drive somebody somewhere for instance, you’re now going to be driving them again there and whenever they want. For free. Or forever repeating whatever other jobs you’ve been paid (once) for. For no pay.

TL;DR: What you want is not gonna happen.
