USB External Drive Not Mounting?

So I came back to my Studio to find that it had rebooted for some reason and that Time Machine was reporting that it couldn't backup to my USB drive because it was "read-only".

I tried unmounting the drive only to discover that I can't seem to mount it again now. I rebooted, no impact. I can see it in Disk Utility but right-clicking 'Mount' on the partition does nothing, yielding an error 'Couldn't mount - com.apple.DiskManagement.dis enter error 0'

Did something happen to the drive?

Mac Studio, macOS 12.3

when repair takes a long time, it can indicate that a drive is accumulating errors, and may be dead soon. You should obtain an additional drive and start an additional backup set. Just set the new drive as an additional time machine destination, and time machine will alternate -- every other backup to every other drive.

Since the new drive is a stand-alone backup set, the first backup to it will take all afternoon.

You are free to remove the old drive at any time.
