IPhone dims in bright sunlight

My IPhone 13 dims in bright sunlight. Of course, I googled and tried the usual recommended fixes: turn up brightness, turn off or turn on auto-adjust, adjust the white point, restart, get latest operating system. None worked. Haven‘t tried the „Hail Mary“ of factory reset ( really? Which moron would recommend that?). It helps to put the phone in a pocket, wait for it to cool down or adjust to the „dark environment” there: it then works again like a charm —- until the next darkening. This is an operating system glitch that Apple needs to fix.

Hey there PuzzledAverageUser,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We're happy to provide some assistance.

As mentioned under the "If your device gets too warm" section of If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch gets too hot or too cold "Avoid leaving your device in direct sunlight for an extended period of time.".

"If the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, you might notice these changes:

  • Charging, including wireless charging, slows or stops.
  • The display dims or goes black."

We hope this helps!

Thanks, Rob_H1. I appreciate your answer. That may be it, indeed. It is really unfortunate, though, that there is no warning or indication by the IPhone that this is the cause. It just dims and the user is left puzzled as to what is going on. I have been trying all kinds of things to resolve this, searching various websites for resolutions: mind you, the previous advice was anything BUT this, and that tells you something about how the user is left alone and how none of the tech guys out there seemed to have a clue. It was a random guess excluding all other causes, that just perhaps this was about sunlight exposure --- and I guess you confirm that here. Now, the IPhone will give a warning screen if it really really gets too hot --- but apparently, that dimming happens much earlier. Why not at least provide a little warning at the top of the screen "Screen was dimmed due to heat --- cool of IPhone" or so. It sure would help ---if that is indeed the cause (I still cannot be sure).
