I had to replace my MacBook Air for a 2017 model. I keep my photos in iPhotos on an external hard drive and cannot access them due to no longer having iPhoto on Mac.
Can I buy iWork ‘11 disc to install iPhoto then access in this way? Will it be compatible with latest OS?
would my iPhoto library on hard drive even recognise the new install.

You can open an iPhoto library with the Photos app. Hold down the option key while opening Photos and it will give you the option to select your iPhoto library and will open and convert it to Photos.

No, there is no way to purchase a version of iPhoto that will work for you. It was killed off more than seven years ago.
As FoxFifth says the answer is to open the Library with Photos, the app that replaced iPhoto.
In the Finder click on the drive and go File -> Get Info. The resulting window will tell you what format it is:
Do you have space to (temporarily) move your iPhoto Library from the external drive to your main drive?
I'm guessing here and don't know that will help.

Thank you I really appreciate any help I can get. I have 108GB on Mac but when I click on iPhoto library it says calculating size so not sure, but I doubt it as I didn’t have it on my last one (which just stopped working)
What format is that external drive? It needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or apfs for Photos.
It is very unlikely that you will lose your photographs. At worst we can recover the original images.
Sorry not very technical so will try my best to answer. The hard drive is my passport but not sure how it’s formatted. I did have difficulty opening it with my last Mac 2012 MacBook Air and I installed WD app to open on this new 2017 mb air.

That's why Photos can't open the iPhoto Library. It needs the drive to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or apfs.
You can reformat the drive with Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) BUT reformatting a drive will erase it, so copy important data to another location first.
Thank you for replying. I have tried this several times but it either doesn’t transfer at all or gets stuck at 8% when transferring.
Ah ok I was hoping that iWorks was an option as I can’t get the iPhoto to photo transfer to happen. No idea what else to try. All my photos of kids etc on there, would be devastated to lose them

It worked! I can't thank you enough I managed to empty the hard drive then re format to as you suggested and got it to open in photos. All my baby photos, yay! couldn't be happier, thank you!!
