How do you make a bootable copy of Monterrey since the installer now disappears from the Applications folder after the upgrade and the Apple website does not allow it to be downloaded again since the OS is up-to-date? I realize now that I should have made the copy before actually installing it.

Keep a copy on an external drive. Flash drives have may be unreliable for active backups but can be good for mostly static repositories. Just download again from App Store when a new release of Monterey is available.
You can download Monterey from the AppStore. As soon as the download is done and the installation will start, quit this. You’ll find Monterey again in Applications
Open the Terminal App and enter the following command followed by a Return
softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 12.4
