Error code -42
I have had a G5 tower with two extra hard drives. The OSx version was 3.x.
I am planning on getting rid of it but I want to save the files accumulated.
I set it up and powered it up and transfered all the files and directories I
want to save over to a 2015 Mac mini running High Sierra. The copy over
file sharing went without problems.
But now I want to copy the G5 content to another mini also running High
Sierra. I am getting a dialog and the copy process over file sharing connection
is aborted with error code -42. Why would the initial copy work and this
copy attempt be causing problems? In addition I noticed that the source mini
had to be restarted for some reason. I thought that might have something to
do with it. But I tried the copy process again and got the same error code notice.
I also tried to copy the G5 content to another 2020 mini with M1 chip running
Monterey. I did not get the copy error (-42) but I did get a notice stating that
some files could not be copied because of inadequate permissions. The dirs
and/or files were not specified. So I would have to root through some 36 Gbs
of content to figure out what was lacking permissions.
Thank you for time and attention:
