Mark single message as read in apple mail

Using the drop down arrow in the left hadn't summary tab allows me to mark a previous email as unread however marking the most recent one unread will mark the entire conversation unread. There seems to be no way to do it on the right hand side either. Previous discussions have mentioned right click or two finger swipe and neither of which do anything. Can anyone help. This is a constant frustration
