Apple Watch capability

I have an Apple Watch series 6 without cellular and an iPhone 12. I was in a situation that I don’t understand. I had left my phone 30 miles from my watch. I was with a friend who had an iPhone 6. I never made any attempt to pair my watch with his iPhone. Probably he had Bluetooth on.


I was able to text my wife using my Apple Watch. The only way that I can understand that this could have worked was for my watch to have somehow paired with my friends iPhone. I would think that this would not occur without making any attempt to set up a pairing through his Bluetooth? However that is what appeared to happen. Does this make sense?

Your Apple Watch remembers all the WiFi logins your iPhone has ever used unless you specifically chose to ‘forget’ them. So if you were near a WiFi hot spot that you used on your iPhone, like AT&T or Verizon or Starbucks, or whatever, your watch will connect to it. If you were at your friend’s house and ever logged into their WiFi network your watch would remember and connect to it.
