My question is if my MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2012) can be updated to a newer macOS such as macOS Sierra 10.12? At the moment I have OS X El Capitan 10.11 (not compatible with nordVPN app) I need at least this version of macOS Sierra 10.12 because my nordVPN APP won'y download with an older version. Thank you for your help!

This model of the MacBook Air can be upgraded up to macOS Catalina 10.15.7

You can certainly upgrade, but the question is why you would want a VPN - unless you are in a direct connection tunnel to your employer or bank, it is of very little/no value.
