The system keeps unselect the app I'm typing on

Hi there,

I hope I can explain my situation well to get some solution. This problem started happening when I was still using my previous MacBook Pro (2011 model) last year. While I was on an app (safari, email, messages, word etc) and typing, the computer unselected the currently using app. It didn't happen until a few years ago, but when it started doing it, it was getting quite irritating. At first I thought it was because my laptop was 10 years old, but when I got the new laptop (MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021)) and noticed that it still behaves the same way, I realized that it was not the problem of the laptop itself but more of the system. I of course doubted if I was tapping the trackpad by accident, but it was not the case at all.

I wonder if anyone else has the same problem and could give me a hint to resolve this irritating problem.

Thanks in advance.

Okay, Sarge, I figured it out for myself, all without having to do anything drastic! It turns out that previous posters were right -- and thank the Lord I indeed did find that there was a history of other users having this same problem, otherwise I'd've thought you and I were going crazy! Anyway, in my case, I hadn't updated the utility application CleanMyMac since last October, and when I checked, there were some pretty significant version updates. I did indeed update it, and voila! No more deselecting, graying out, or, a nice term I saw during the Google searches I'll tell you about below, apps "losing focus".

Anyway, yes, what put me onto finding this all out was doing my own Google searches, such as the following:

https://www.google.com/search?q=finder+mac+app+window+deselected

https://www.google.com/search?q=macbook+constantly+deselecting+active+window

However, I'd've never even thought of doing this if it wasn't for your previous mention about doing your own search! Some of the posters in the various discussions mention how you just leave your Activity Monitor on with no other apps open and try to catch when the deselection occurs to isolate the culprit. I think another thing you can try is to run a Console report, which, it's funny, not even Apple Support ever mentions to do first.

Anyway, I hope this helps you out, my friend, as well as any future victims who may be looking this up -- that's why I offer this to posterity! Best of luck, and feel free to reach out here as well, always.

Thank you so much for sharing your observations! I suspect some program is causing this too, but cannot tell what it is. I am not using any adguard apps. When I googled the problem a few mouths ago, I found people saying this was caused by Finder; however, the comments were written 4 years ago and also required some typing in terminal so I didn't really look into it. I also looked at activity monitor when that happens but I could't tell what is what.

I also did adjustment of trackpad and didn't help either.

But if this is caused by a certain app or program, it actually makes sense that it still happens to my new laptop because I used time machine to transfer all the files and programs, which means whatever causing this was transferred along with other files. I don't have any suspicious apps installed. I just hope this will be solved soon.

I don't think it's a hardware problem as well... I will also keep you posted if I find some more information about this problem.

So my thought that there might be something to do with keyboard access, but when I tried to reset keyboard permissions using this command in Terminal:

sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyboardtype.plist

I got nowhere, so the problem still exists. In desperation, I have tried a new Bluetooth keyboard to see if this is the issue. Maybe this is worth trying for yourself, however, Sarge, just to see if you get anywhere? Worse comes to worst, you scratch this approach off your list. In the meantime, I will monitor and see if this solves the issue for me. Talk more soon!

I'm sorry for the late response! For some weird reason, it didn't let me log in until now. If I tried to log in, it went to an error.

Anyway, I think your suspicion on some auto update programs sounds quite right. The problem just happened right now, and I looked at activity monitor right away, yet I couldn't tell anything at all as usual lol I also use Microsoft office. But I have been using it since I purchased my previous 10 year old MacBook Pro and it didn't have the problem for the first 9 years. For the current one, I am also subscribing it, but there was time I didn't sign up and tried to see if I could use apple softwares instead and the problem was still occurring even then... I think I saw dropbox in activity monitor when the problem happened just now, so I start to wonder if one of those cloud file folders is actually making it happen. I also observed if the app name on the left top corner next to apple icon would change when that happens and it didn't. I was typing on Discord and it remained on Discord but my cursor just disappeared from the typing box.

I think whenever this happens, I will take a screenshot of activity monitor and observe if there is a common pattern with it.

Hi, Sarge, I actually have the exact same issue, except mine is with my 2017 iMac, no trackpad but instead Magic Mouse! This has been driving me absolutely berserk (relatively speaking, LOL), and I tried all the usual suspects: Safe Mode, First Aid, reinstall Monterey 12.4, shutting down extensions, etc., both at the kind suggestions of a fellow user here on the boards and then after a call with Apple Support, but all to no avail. I have not looked yet at Preferences, however, so this could lead to something! I can definitely let you know how I make out. All I can say though, is, yes, VERY irritating problem. With luck, I can reach back to you soon!

So far, adjusting the mouse settings doesn't seem to have helped at all. Apple Support wonders if this is a hardware issue, but reading your current problems, Sarge, I just don't know, and I suspect that you and I are having some sort of software conflicts. I am curious, are you running Little Snitch, Adguard, or both on your MacBook? I'm just wondering if something isn't playing nice with Monterey 12.4, since it's only really been with the current update that I am having problems. Very curious about your answers, but also again whether anyone else has either any experiences similar to ours or, better yet, any workarounds or solutions!

Jun 3, 2022 2:52 PM in response to Sarge10709

First off, Sarge, happy to hear from you! I was actually directed to your thread here by the user dialabrain, so much thanks to him, for sure.

Sounds like your research and mine are exactly alike, Sarge. I actually saw when I searched the boards here that this problem went back to Big Sur, and almost eight years ago, so obviously things haven't changed much in that time! I tried Activity Monitor myself last night, but no luck finding any suspicious process, and I rather doubt it's anything like Adguard or Little Snitch myself. One possible culprit is Microsoft Autoupdate, at least in my case, but I wonder if that's ever been problematic for you as well; I could very well just be grasping at straws with this. However, another weird thing I noticed is that, for some reason, just before all this hassle commenced, I had a prompt to have my Keyboard Setup Assistant allow another keyboard, and that's around when everything started going wonky...so tell you what -- I might try something and then report back to you. We'll get to the bottom of this, my friend! Hang in there.

Jun 6, 2022 12:23 PM in response to Sarge10709

No problem, Sarge! I actually went back and reloaded my previous Time Machine backup, and all was well until this morning, sigh. I actually noticed that Microsoft Autoupdate updated itself without me even requesting it, so I am truly starting to think it's just our bad luck that there's something fluky going on there. In any event, since this seemed to be working okay beforehand, I am now really convinced that this is a software issue and not a hardware one. For now, all I know is that it seems to be every fifteen minutes or so, so for it to be as regular as that, there must be something weird but regular going on. There might be one permission that I am going to shut off for MAU to see if that does the trick. If not, I think I am going to contact Apple Support one more time and let them know everything that's been going on since my last call in and see whether this new person can be of any assistance. Again, keep the flags flying, Sarge, and I'll keep you updated with any progress, Lord willing!

So my problem seems to be getting worse and worse, Sarge, and now I'm even starting to see this in Finder windows too. On my second call to Apple Support earlier today, I spoke to a more senior advisor who wants me to completely erase the iMac and then try selectively putting in data and apps to see whether I can replicate the problem. If after a while everything is okay, this points away from a hardware problem. I just can't bear thinking of the hours and days that will be needed to restore all my data without a Time Machine backup reinstall, but we'll just have to cross that bridge when we come to it (I'm likely taking this weekend to do this). To tell the truth, I'm about ready to chuck it all in and just get a new Mac of some kind, but since there are no more 27" iMac models, I could think about a Studio and Studio monitor -- but I'm just not ready to give up yet. I just can't believe that you and I are the only Apple users who have this problem, much less talked about it on here! Can I just ask you if you could remember and let me know precisely what you typed in as your Google search, so that I could see what I could try on Terminal and work on possible rectification? Sigh, the things I do for this platform, LOL...

Hi Patrick!

I'm so happy about you solved the problem!!! Congratulations. I can tell how smooth your life is with your iMac now! I really really hate when support specialists tell you to erase everything and re-install all manual and all that stuff... cuz as you mentioned it take days to do it!!!! And I also was going to tell you not to get a new iMac because I got my new MacBook Pro and thought it would resolve the problem but it came along with it instead lol So we both knew it wasn't a hardware problem.

I don't use CleanMyMac, but I will take a look at those apps that I didn't install from App store to see if some are awfully out of date. But knowing something like that was causing this "graying out" problem gives me my hopes up to getting rid of the problem!

"losing focus" - makes sense. Nice search word to remember!

Thank you again for going through with me! I was ready to be just ignored but you have been a good supporter and helper for me to go through this. I'll report you when I figure out my own issue to you! And hope some people have the same problem can find this thread and being able to help themselves from this headache.
