Password security questions pop up

Password windows pop up for "needed security password update". The passwords entered don't fit the apparent expectation. My Apple ID password doesn't work nor does the password needed to open up Mac air. I am not aware of another password I'd need. Then it says that some security functions won't work because of this not being entered. I am at a loss. Can you help?
