Tried to open mail on my IMAC this afternoon and momentarily saw the mail then immediately it closed with and error message"Mail quit unexpectedly" IMAC running 10.11.6

Did you try a second or third time?
Did you reboot and try it again?
If you did and it still crashes give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Old Toad you fixed my problem. Opened in Intel safe mode, email opened and stayed open. Closed and reopened in normal start and now its working. Thank my man you solved the problem.
Happens to me too every now and then. Computers are strange creatures and sometimes they just hiccup for no good reason. Never give up after one try; always try multiple times and then restart. A restart can often fix small anomalies.
