setup fingerprint for magic keyboard

I bought a brand new magic keyboard with Touch ID. I turned on the magic keyboard and connect it to Mac Pro OS Monterey. I didn't know for some reason the magic keyboard was paired automatically but I didn't get a chance to set up a fingerprint. Now it doesn't allow me to follow the new magic keyboard setup process to add a fingerprint. How do I fix the problem?

Under System Preferences, select Touch ID and then add a fingerprint. If your system is compatible, you can add the keyboard fingerprint sensor.

I just ran into this problem, and the above solution works

UNFORTUNATELY the fingerprint function for the magic keyboard with Touch ID DOES NOT WORK if you have a MacBook Pro with the 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 processor. You MUST have the M1 processor. Will Apple correct this? Does anyone know? I just bought the Magic keyboard with Touch ID, the person at the store told me it would work. The Touch ID function does not work. when I go to system preferences and add a finger print and touch the key on the magic Keyboard, NOTHING happens. All this button does for me is lock my MacBook Pro. A disclaimer at the store or on the box would have helped. Perhaps I missed it in the fine print. This is surprising as Apple is usually really good about hardware compatibility on some previous hardware.

The Magic keyboard "Touch ID" part will only work with M1 SoC Macs...

Can you verify that is what you are using...(?)

No one could possibly know if Apple will offer the ability to use Touch ID on this keyboard with non-M1 Macs. This is a user to user only forum, so no one from Apple is here. But usually, features on newer devices are not rolled down to older devices, so its doubtful. Most often, this is due to hardware limitations.

Feel free to let Apple know this is something you'd like to see via this link --> Feedback - MacBook - Apple

Apple will at least read your response via the link, but they will not respond back to you.
