3D scanning accuracy and precision

Hi everyone,

I'm a CAD designer and wonder about the performance of LiDAR on iPad and iPhone Pros. Can't find specification from Apple's official channels and I have non of the devices to test, would appreciate much if someone able to test this?

Take an object, like a coke bottle or a pencil, measure diameter and length, best if able to get 0.1mm decimal point or better. Then use a 3D scanning app on iPhone/iPad to scan that object, measure the diameter and length of the scanned image, do 3 times.

Accuracy is how close the 3D scan measurements were to the physical measurement. Precision is how repeatable are the measurements (hence the 3 times scans).

Hello lkshean,

To learn more about measuring on iPhone or iPad, see: https://support.apple.com/HT208924

How to take multiple measurements

1. After you take the first measurement, move your device to place the dot over another location on or near the object.
2. Tap the Add button  to start the second measurement, then move your device to place the dot somewhere along the existing measurement.*
3. Tap the Add button  again and the second measurement appears.
4. Repeat these steps to take as many measurements as you'd like.

Tap the Undo button  to remove the most recent measurement, or tap Clear to start over.

* Additional measurements must start or end somewhere along an existing measurement. Otherwise, all previous measurements are replaced by the newest one.

These are the available resources for measuring on iPhone and iPad. If you have feedback you'd like to provide Apple about this, we'd recommend using: https://www.apple.com/feedback/

Let us know if that helps out or not, cheers.
