Contact name is red and it says it's not registered with iMessage

When I try to message a contact the name is red and it says the contact is not registered with imessage

You can only send messages to other iMessage users from an iPad unless you connect the iPad to an iPhone.

I'm pretty sure that's not an option on an iPad. Also, all it does is make sure that, if an iMessage fails, the phone will resend it as an SMS. It has no effect at all on sending SMSs to non-iMessage users.


I think it's one of the most confusingly named options in Settings.
