How can I change my gmail password in Mac Mail running Catalina. Neither Google's instructions nor the suggested Mac accounts/preferences changes work.

I changed my gmail password for security reasons but now I can't change my gmail account password in Mac mail. There is no password field in accounts and when I try to open Mail, I'm instructed to "Enter the password for the account ..." I click the "Open Safari" button but nothing happens. Please tell me how to fix this.
