iCloud > iCloud Drive vs Documents. How to think about those?

I recently started using iCloud for documents. I moved my ~/Documents folder to iCloud. So ~/Documents no longer exists. But now I have:



iCloud Drive seems oriented toward iOS organization where documents were stored in folders named after the app. I think this is historical now, but persists. Documents is what it's been for a long time on macOS.


OK I had missed something. The Documents in the screenshot above is probably an alias as iCloud/Documents is there along with all the folders named after apps.


I see little reason to have Pages documents in a folder "iCloud/Documents/Pages" and organize those on my own. One of the folders was created in iOS and seems to be acting like something that should be in "Application Support."


I don't want to fight Apple's way if I can avoid it, but any ideas on how to think about this? I don't use an iPad and do as little as possible writing or photo sorting on my phone. I prefer the desktop. I still have Dropbox for historical reasons and it syncs much faster, but can see giving it up if iCloud gets faster.


I'm heading off on a long trip without a macOS machine and it has me thinking more about organization and what documents I won't be able to read while traveling.


Not a very cogent question, but what's the way forward to organizing documents? And how reliable is iCloud? I know not everything is stored on my iPhone.

Also confused about why I can't select both iCloud on Mac and iCloud on iPhone for topics. Isn't that what the cloud is about, supporting both?

Anything stored in iCloud is available on all of your connected devices. You can enable desktop and documents on your Mac to sync those locations if you wish (system preferences > Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Drive options). Otherwise, only items in the iCloud Drive folder will sync. Some applications will create iCloud folders to post their data. You can choose to save files there or elsewhere.

Does that mean if I turn off, example Pages, the Pages folder will disappear?


On macOS I see Game Center which I've never used AFAIK, but doesn't appear in iOS. Appears in Preferences on macOS but not in the iCloud folder which I presume means that if I had used Game Center the folder would be created.


OK, so a Pages folder was created automatically, but if I move the documents from that folder and then turn off the option Preferences, the Pages folder will not longer be used? Do I need to turn off the option in both iOS and macOS? Or I making this more complicated than it is. And I have two macOS devices.
