Transaction expired where’s the money

rent paid using Apple Pay. Five transactions expired and neither of us have received the money. What happened to the funds? It did not go back to the originator and it has been several months.

When I was looking at my Apple Pay account last night, I had a payment from this customer in November that is crossed out and says expired.
