when switching to wifi, ExpressVPN works just fine. I've spent hours with ExpressVPN support. Uninstalled the app, rebooted, changed protocols, deleted Little Snitch, no change. Internet works fine either on ethernet or on wifi, just the VPN "can't see the internet" and won't connect when on ethernet.

Unless you have a very specific requirement, say by an employer, you'll be better off not using a VPN. In certain circumstances, maybe mandated by someone you work for, you may need one. But in day to day operations and internet usage, common sense is your best protection.
Commercial VPNs should only be used if Mandated by Corporate Head Office for working remotely. Otherwise - ones Privacy and Security touted by the VPN is suspect.
After all - they are a Business and do have access to all the personal financial and location details of the user and are known to sell this information for profit.
